Charlie has presented a series a lectures on board cruise ships (MV Discovery and Clelia II) sailing around Brazilian waters. Geology, Biology, Ecology, Geography, Conservation, Environmental Legislation, Sustainability and History in the Amazon and other important land and marine ecosystems in Brazil and South America are included in his lectures.
Lecture options are:
1. The Formation of South America – an overview of the geology of South America starting at the Big Bang, to the formation of the earth, to the separation of Africa and South America and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean – which ultimately defines the current geological formations of South America.
2. Geography of South America – from tropical rain forests to glaciers near the Antartic continent, an overview of the diversity of climates and physical geography along the different latitudes, which determine the existing Bioms and Ecosystems of South America.
3. The Amazon Basin – Geography, geology, hydrology, human occupation, flora and fauna. Understanding the largest hydrographic basin in the world.
4. The Atlantic Forest – Mata Atlantica – A presentation of its many different ecosystems, which gives this biom, per area unit, one of the greatest biodiversities on earth – greater even than the Amazon!
5. Important Brazilian Biomes. The Pantanal -located in the very middle of South America it´s one of the main wildlife watching destinations in Brazil. The Cerrado – Brazilian Savanna – greatly threatened by human occupation. The Caatinga, an exclusively Brazilian biome which you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
6. Conservation Units and Environmental Legislation. Brazil is a continental country with many natural beauties which must be cared for. Its Environmental Legislation is one of the most complete and protective in the world. Let’s understand how it works.
7. Human occupation of Amazonia. Throughout its history, Brazil had the influence of several different peoples which mixed together along the centuries, resulting in extremely diverse ways of life and forms of expression – an overview of the Amazon history.
8. Threats to the Amazon Environment. Population and economic growth are posing a major threat to the integrity of the Amazon. From logging, to farming, to energy production, how to keep it safe under so much pressure?
9. Reef Fish and Marine Conservation in Brazil, how basic science helped the expansion of Marine Conservation Units and engaged local populations in preserving our reefs.
10. Ideas on Sustainability – Discussion and assessment of the greatest environmental threats to the planet to raise general awareness and come up with sustainability practices to decrease problems.
