Interpreter, lecturer, group leader
Charlie Flesch’s first passion became scuba diving when he was 14. Now at the age of 35, in spite of having collected over 1,000 dives, it turns out he had to wear some other hats too.
At 19, after becoming a scuba dive professional, he went to Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP) to study biology, and eventually joined a marine fish project and got to dive the whole Brazilian coast.
At the age of 24 he took up Brazilian Percussion (got a degree in music) and worked as a professional musician for 6 years.
Back to biology, he focused on Field Studies Trips, which consists of group leading and giving outdoor classes to school pupils on areas such as the Amazon, Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest. A teaching degree in Biology and Sciences followed.
Going on trips with the international schools in Brazil led him to acquire a certificate of proficiency in English from the University of Cambridge. When he lived in England he attended the 39th Conference of the National Association of Field Studies Officers (www.nafso.org.uk), visited several Field Studies Centres and lectured to local kids on Brazilian ecosystems.
He then went off to Egypt to work as a scuba dive instructor in the Red Sea, in a place listed by Jacques Cousteau among the top 10 dive sites in the world.
Back in Brazil he went back to university to learn simultaneous translation and work as a Conference Interpreter.
The combination of professional experiences and travels around South America enabled him to work as a tour leader and to lecture on cruise ships to an English speaking audience presenting a comprehensive series of lectures on Ecology, Geology, Geography and Conservation of South America and the Brazilian ecosystems.
Learning, teaching, travelling and interpreting make up his expertise.
